Folklórico Dance Workshops
September 21-23, 2011
9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Folklórico Dance workshops will take place Thursday and Friday from 9am to 4pm, with joint rehearsal on Saturday (TBA) featuring instruction by maestros Rafael Zamarripa, Juan Carlos Gaytán, Rudy Figueroa, and Jessica Torres.
Dance classes will be taught at multiple levels of instruction in order to meet the skill level of each student. In addition, students will enjoy uplifting performance opportunities at the Student Showcase Concert and the performance at the HP Pavilion.
Dance students should wear appropriate dance or sports attire that allows optimum movement. Bring water bottles, boots/shoes, pañuelos, rebozos, and practice skirts. Have Jalisco hats handy.
All three instructors will prepare dances that will be presented in the Gala Concert on Sunday evening.
Advanced Teens/Adults – maestro Rafael Zamarripa
Maestro Zamarripa will be setting dances from Jalisco, but more importantly will engage his students with his Técnica RaZa a unique blend of movement and music that is designed to improve zapateo in parallel with dance skills. Zamarripa says “it is more important to teach dance, than to teach dances.” Advanced students will experience a multitude of técnica challenges that combine arms and harmonies, movement and melodies, torsos and taconeos.
The Maestro will also be offering a daily lecture, open to all classes, after the lunch break. He will speak to the students about the roots of the folklórico movement and will also take questions. This is a special chance to hear from one of the giants of this dance genre.
Intermediate Teens/Adults – maestro Juan Carlos Gaytán
Maestro Gaytán will also be setting dances from Jalisco. Aside from using the same Técnica RaZa to challenge the skills of his class, he will focus on step sequence and choreographic movement that are akin to the correct styling of Jalisco.
Children – maestros Jessica Torres & Rudy Figureroa
Maestros Figueroa and Torres will provide a dance curriculum tailored towards our youngest workshop dancers. Class will cover zapateado and faldeo technique as well as choreography and proper Jalisco styling.
All Mariachi Musicians, Vocalists and Dancer Workshops will take place at The Tech Museum located at 201 South Market Street, San José, CA
