A native of Los Angeles and the son and grandson of immigrants from Mexico and El Salvador, Rubén Martínez is a writer, performer and teacher. He is the author of several books, including Crossing Over: A Mexican Family on the Migrant Trail.
As a musician, he has collaborated with the likes of Johnette Napolitano, The Roches, and Los Illegals. He is Fletcher Jones Chair in Literature and Writing at Loyola Marymount University. Martínez has written for such publications as The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Salon, Mother Jones, The Nation, Sojourner’s, among many others.
He is the recipient of an Emmy Award, a Freedom of Information Award from the American Civil Liberties Union, and fellowships from the Lannan Foundation and Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design.
